Pitcher with a Rolled Rim and Squared Rosewood Handle

A rolled rim crowns this pitcher, its handle a squared length of rosewood set against the raised silver body - the warm, dense wood contrasting with the metal in the way Morrill describes as characteristic of Spratling's combining of materials, a sensibility he shared with the French silversmith Puiforcat (p. 224). The design was also produced in slightly larger sizes.

The squared handle is a small but telling choice, geometry carried into the one component the hand actually grips. It belongs to the workshop's table holloware, made alongside the jewelry that built the maker's reputation.
