Curatorial note

This salad-server spoon, with projections at the neck and a hammered bowl, shares the documented exhibition history of its matching fork: bearing the early "WS print" hallmark, the pair were among nineteen Spratling pieces shown at the Brooklyn Museum's "Contemporary Industrial & Handwrought Silver" of 1937-38. The museum's correspondence noted the Spratling case as among the most admired and the only Mexican craftsmanship in the exhibit.

The hammered bowl keeps the hand-wrought surface central to the Las Delicias workshop's identity. The spoon later reached a wide American market, sold as part of a salad set through Montgomery Ward in 1943 at $15.00 ($30.00 the set).

A chased-handle version of the design was also produced. The spoon is recorded in Morrill and Berk's Mexican Silver and in The Christmas Book 1943 by Montgomery Ward.
