Catalogued as 5701, this pendant carries one of the inventory numbers Margot's workshop assigned to each design. Morrill notes that lower numbers generally mark earlier pieces (Morrill, p. 15), placing a design in the 5700s within the enamel-on-silver line Margot added in 1955.
Sterling silver worked with vitreous enamel is the signature of her house. The champlevé method came out of Los Castillo, first worked there by Reveriano Castillo and Miguel Melendez, and Margot perfected it into one of her major lines (Morrill, p. 166).
Because Margot designed everything her company produced and recorded how each piece was assembled, including the placement of the loop and which set a pendant belonged to (Morrill, p. 168), a numbered pendant may have been conceived as part of a matching suite.
Pendants from this line are seen at market only occasionally, and the intact number ties this one to her catalog.
