Curatorial note

A silver ring set with a tapered wedge of azur malachite is singular in Spratling's output: it is the only known example, to date, of a ring designed and produced as part of his Conquistador series. The wedge of malachite gives the ring an architectural, almost faceted profile.

Azur malachite was a stone Spratling returned to across his jewelry, including his North Star designs (Morrill, p. 66). A ring within the Conquistador group makes this a rare survival from a named design series, of particular interest to collectors tracking the completeness of his lines.

The ring is recorded in Phyllis Goddard's Spratling Silver field guide.
