Curatorial note

A contemporary small cream pitcher in the Volteo pattern, its ebony handle held in place by a silver band - a clean, functional detail that turns the join itself into ornament. The banded handle is the design's defining feature.

The form is well documented through the workshop's catalogues: the creamer and sugar wholesaled at $18.00 in 1958-59, $20.00 in 1961, and $24.00 by 1967, and the design was carried into the 1965 traveling exhibition "The World of William Spratling." The dark ebony against silver follows the material contrast Morrill associates with Spratling's affinity for Puiforcat (p. 224).

The pitcher is recorded in Cederwall and Riney's Spratling Silver.
