Curatorial note

A meat platter bordered with a worked silver rope, the twisted-cord edge being one of Spratling's recurring devices - a motif he traced to the saddle and cord ornament of Mexican charro dress, among the "point of departure" sources he described drawing on in his early work (Morrill, p. 39). The rope border frames an otherwise plain raised surface.

It was also made in a larger 24-by-16-inch size, and a vegetable bowl shares the same shape, marking it as part of a coordinated table service. The piece belongs to the first design period at Las Delicias.

The platter is recorded in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide.
