Curatorial note

A hollow silver ball flanked by two beads on each side, set on a rope-design band, this ring is documented through the maker's own catalog history: it appears as item #AN-10 in Spratling's 1938 catalog and as AN-514 in all later catalogs until 1945. The catalog trail fixes the design across the heart of the first design period.

The rope band ties the piece to the cord and saddle ornament Spratling cited as a starting point for his early work (Morrill, p. 39), while the central hollow ball and beadwork are the workshop's recurring silver vocabulary.

The ring is recorded in Goddard's Spratling Silver: A Field Guide.
