Design 5844 is one of the numbered necklaces from Margot de Taxco's enamel-on-silver line, identified by the inventory number stamped on its reverse rather than by a descriptive name. Morrill notes that lower numbers generally mark earlier designs (Morrill, p. 15), placing a model in the 5800s within the enameled production she introduced in 1955.
Sterling silver bearing vitreous enamel was the workshop's signature pairing. The champlevé method came out of Los Castillo, where Reveriano Castillo and Miguel Melendez initiated it, and Margot perfected it into one of her central lines (Morrill, p. 166).
She designed everything her company made and kept detailed written instructions for each piece, including the dies and enamel colors (Morrill, p. 168), so a numbered necklace is a documented model from that system.
The intact design number ties this necklace to Margot's own catalog.
